Josh Roseman

trombone

Trombonist-trickster Josh Roseman projects a mixture of soul and surprise, rigor, open space and outlandish improvisation.

His ensembles range from the unpredictable Water Surgeons (an "ambient electronic trombone choir") to the "12 piece petting zoo” known as the King Froopy
Allstars to unaccompanied acoustic solo performances. His core electric ensemble, the Josh Roseman Unit, has toured extensively thoughout Europe and the United States over the past 10 years and is an uncharacteristically bold and modern setting for a venerable instrument.

Roseman’s trombone voice is balanced by his affinity for modern soul, edgy postbop, reggae and the avant-garde. His creative alliances include Dave Holland, Dave Douglas, Steve Coleman, Don Byron, Uri Caine, Me'shell Ndegeocello, Oliver Lake, John Zorn, The Skatalites, Charlie Hunter, Soulive, MMW, Peter Apfelbaum, the late Lester Bowie and many others. He has appeared on well over 100 albums with artists ranging rom Cibo Matto to the Roots to Bryan McKnight to the SFJAZZ Collective.

His solo albums include the groundbreaking funk epic "Treats for the Nightwalker," and more recently, "New Constellations," a live dub tribute to Jamaican trombone pioneer Don Drummond.

Roseman has taught clinics in performance and improvisation at the Berklee school of music, New England Conservatory, the School for Improvisational Music, Stanford University, Banff, the New School, NYU, and the Jazz School in Berkeley, CA.

He resides in Brooklyn, where he is the director of 58N6, an active recording and multimedia facility in the heart of Williamsburg. The space serves as a center of operations for a number of operations, including his production company, Scrootable Labs inc, the New York Slideworkers' Union concert series and Wholetone media.
