While beginning his musical career in Kansas City, Steve has been an integral part of the jazz community in New York for sixteen years. Performing and recording with such groups as the Paul Motian Septet, Charlie Haden Liberation Music Orchestra, the Ben Allison Band and the Steve Swallow Quintet, to mention a few. Steve also leads his own trio performing at a number of venues around New York City. He has toured Europe extensively, performing at various festivals including the North Sea and Montreux jazz festivals on numerous occasions. Steve has three recordings as a leader with a new trio record, "West of Middle," recently released on Sunnyside Records. He also appears as a sideman on many recordings. Along with performing and recording, Steve teaches at the New School in New York where he leads the Thelonious Monk Ensemble and gives private lessons. Also, Steve collaborated with editor Don Sickler on a book of Monk's compositions through Hal Leonard Publishing. The Thelonious Monk Fakebook marks the premier publishing of all of Monk's compositions together, with many of them appearing for the first time.
